The Winner—Vern Hancock who is rapidly becoming one

MATCHLESS
First Home in Cactus Derby
Lammy Lamoreaux rides them all and has a
wonderful time. Not a bad piece of road either.
AN annual Enduro that is put on by
that very active and efficient mo-
torcycle club, the Riverside Bombers,
The Cactus Derby, is without a doubt
one of the best that is staged in the
Western area, but has not received the
wide publicity it deserves. The run tra-
ditionally starts at midnight on Satur-
day night of a chosen week-end in the
late fall, and continues straight through
the following day with only time out
for meals. This run of between three
and four hundred miles of continuous
riding makes it a very grueling ordeal
for both riders and equipment. The win-
ner each year can well be proud of a
remarkable achievement.
The 1951 Cactus Derby started to gain
momentum about the last of July when
“Doc” Trainor and Howard Angell were
appointed co-chairmen of the event,
scheduled for Sept. 23rd. It ended when
Vern Hancock was awarded the famous
Derby trophy for his win with a 30:50
single Matchless road model of one of
Eddie Ryan, Har-Dav Dealer in San Pedro and his side hack show
up at all the tough ones. And Eddie must be pushing to that 70
mark, too.

A tough duo—Max Bubeck and his favorite mount the Warrior
T.T. and Dave Doney on one of those Matchless thumpers that
never seem to tire.
